O'Shea, Timothy J. C. On July 30, 1986, trade representatives from the United States and Japan signed an agreement intended to resolve a long-running dispute over trade in semicond uctors. The U.S.-Japanese Semiconductor Agreement was the fruit of more than a year of complex negotiations aimed at ending a conflict that had started with competition in international markets. This case study describes the negotiations that led to the agreement and its effect on the overall bilateral relationship.
