Thirty-three-year-old Max is received in a cold and austere administrative building. Not knowing what to say, he is sent to the office of his late French teacher, Mrs. Schmidt, who announces that he has just died in a car accident. He is not in Paradise, nor in Purgatory, but in the Inspiratory, and has to choose a literary genre. Thus he will inspire an author on earth who will transform him into a character in a novel.
