A brief visit to an art gallery in southern Italy, and I found myself transfixed, not by the paintings but by the wall of an inner courtyard. The rough stucco and the sheltered but shady conditions had allowed these moulds to grow and bloom in soft cloudy patterns, with the sharp drips contrasting to form a painterly whole. Living art.
