The Moth is Devin Townsend's most ambitious studio album to date — a 24-track, 70-minute rock opera described by Townsend himself as his life's work, released on May 29, 2026 via Inside Out Music and HevyDevy Records. The concept had been gestating in Townsend's mind for over a decade before finally taking shape, premiering as a full live performance at De Oosterpoort in Groningen, Netherlands in March 2025, exactly one year before the studio release. The album was recorded across more than ten countries and studios — including Lighthouse Studio in Vancouver, Dongxi Studios in Beijing, RAK Studios in London, and Topfloor Recording in Göteborg — and features an enormous cast of collaborators: the Noord Nederlands Symphony Orchestra and Choir, guitarist Steve Vai, vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering), Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa), Darby Todd, James Leach, and vocalist Lynn Wu, among hundreds of musicians and engineers.Conceptually, The Moth follows a loose narrative about someone who comes to recognize that old patterns of behaviour no longer serve them, and who must sit with that discomfort rather than avoid it. The moth itself is the central metaphor — a creature so drawn to the light that it burns itself to reach it — representing transformation, self-acceptance, and the terrifying courage required to let old ways die. Metal Planet Music called it "a 24-track, multi-orchestral, globally recorded conceptual behemoth," while The Progressive Subway described it as "a seventy-minute through-composed progressive metal symphony" that draws together every facet of Townsend's career — operatic ambition, ambient texture, hard rock muscle, and progressive complexity — into a single, overarching statement.
