Themeda triandra seeds grow into red grass or kangaroo grass — a perennial tussock grass native to the seasonally dry tropical biome, with one of the widest distributions of any grass species in the Old World: Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, South Asia, South-East Asia, China, Japan, Australia and the Pacific. Described by Forsskål (Pehr Forsskål, 1732–1763, Swedish-Finnish botanist who died during the Danish expedition to Arabia). The epithet triandra means 'three-stamened'. One of the most important savanna grasses of Africa — a dominant grass of the Highveld and one of the most significant grassland grasses across sub-Saharan Africa, where it indicates undisturbed grassland. Also called kangaroo grass in Australia. In South Africa, red grass is often considered the national grass and forms vast pastures ('rooigras' areas).
