Theodore Roosevelt’s account of the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry during the Spanish-American War. First published in 1899, The Rough Riders follows the formation, training, and service of the regiment Roosevelt helped organize after resigning as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. The unit brought together cowboys, frontiersmen, Native Americans, African Americans, college athletes, and other volunteers before training in Texas and shipping out for Cuba. Roosevelt describes the regiment’s movement from San Antonio to Cuba, the conditions faced by the men, and the fighting at Las Guasimas and San Juan Hill. He also records the shortages, disease, rain, mud, heat, and confusion that shaped the campaign. Written from Roosevelt’s own experience, the book helped fix the Rough Riders in the American public memory and added to Roosevelt’s national reputation in the years before he became president.
