Spacing: Plant 2.5 to 3 feet apart for a dense hedge. Durability: Resilient to Wind and Ice: Shows resistance to wind and ice damage effectively. Disease and Insect Resistant: Naturally resistant to the most common issues with arborvitae. Holds Winter Color: Retains green winter color better than most other thujas. Ideal for Privacy Tree Hedge: The Thin Man® Arborvitae is a top choice for fast-growing privacy hedges, perfect for blocking views of pools, neighbors, patios, decks, and unsightly areas. Its narrow growth habit suits most yard sizes without taking up too much space horizontally. Planting and Care Instructions: Light Requirements: Plant in part to full sun for 6 or more hours of daily light. First Planting Year: Focuses on root establishment. Growth accelerates in the second year. Spacing: Plant on 3-foot centers and 2.5 feet from fences or property lines. Planting Steps: Digging the Hole: Dig holes at least 1 foot deep and 1.5 feet wide. Soil Preparation: Mix in one-third aged compost or manure to enrich the soil. Positioning the Plant: Place the plant so it sits 2 inches above the soil line for better drainage. Adding Mulch: Create a donut-shaped mulch ring around the plant base, avoiding direct contact with the trunk. Watering: First Year: Water thoroughly once a week during the growing season (April through October), ensuring roots don't stay soggy. Checking Soil Moisture: If unsure, dig down 3-4 inches near the base; if dry, it's time to water; if moist, wait a few more days. Fertilizing: First Year: Do not fertilize. Beyond First Year: Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in spring starting the second year. Follow the product instructions for best results. Avoid Planting in Chemical Runoff Areas: Ensure chemicals from lawn care are not applied within 10-20 feet of the plants to avoid adverse effects. Additional Tips: Protect Young Trees: Use deer repellent or physical barriers to protect young trees from browsing. Soil Quality: Mix soil with aged compost to prevent hardening and provide nutrients. Drainage: Raise the plant base for better drainage and avoid waterlogging.
