Barbarian Haze is double dry-hopped using the brewery's proprietary Hop Gun Pro system, which maximizes hop oil extraction and aroma intensity without adding harsh vegetal bitterness. The hop bill — Simcoe for dank resinous backbone, Citra for citrus pop, and Mosaic for layered tropical fruit — reflects what Three Floyds describes as "new age brewing alchemy coupled with an old school heavy-handed approach."Tasting NotesAroma: Pineapple leads immediately, followed by ripe mango, papaya, and a streak of tangerine zest. A faint dank, resinous quality sits underneath the fruit, adding depth without overwhelming the tropical character.Taste: The entry is soft and juicy with mango and passionfruit, typical of the New England IPA style. Mid-palate, citrus notes brighten and a grapefruit-peel bitterness emerges on the back end, keeping things balanced rather than cloying. The mouthfeel is smooth and medium-bodied with restrained carbonation.Finish: Moderate in length with a bright, resiny hop presence that lingers alongside faint tropical sweetness. The bitterness is clean and fades without astringency, making the next sip arrive quickly. How to Drink Barbarian HazeServe cold — around 40–45°F — poured into a tulip glass or straight from the can. This beer is at its best fresh, so drink it sooner rather than later to preserve hop aromatics. For cocktail-adjacent serves, try it in a Michelada, where its tropical fruit character plays well against lime and hot sauce; a Beer Margarita (Beergarita), where its citrus backbone extends the drink's acidity; or a Shandy mixed with fresh lemonade, which amplifies the pineapple and mango notes into a crushable warm-weather drink.Best For Stocking the fridge for a summer cookout with hop-loving friends Introducing someone to the hazy IPA style with a well-executed, approachable example Pairing with grilled food, tacos, or spicy dishes that benefit from tropical hop character Gifting a craft beer enthusiast who appreciates Midwest brewing Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Barbarian Haze taste like? The mouthfeel is smooth and medium-bodied with a bright, resiny finish. How does Barbarian Haze compare to Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing? Both are New England-style IPAs, but Barbarian Haze is double dry-hopped with Simcoe, Citra, and Mosaic hops, giving it a more resinous, dank backbone alongside its tropical fruit. Hazy Little Thing tends toward a lighter, more citrus-forward profile and is more widely distributed nationally, while Barbarian Haze carries the heavier-handed hop intensity Three Floyds is known for.Is Barbarian Haze good for beginners? Yes — at 6.5% ABV with a smooth, juicy body and moderate bitterness, it sits in accessible territory for anyone curious about hazy IPAs without being overwhelming.Where is Barbarian Haze made? The brewery has been operating at that location since 2000.What foods pair well with Barbarian Haze? Grilled fish tacos work well, as the tropical hop character echoes mango salsa. Spicy Thai curry benefits from the beer's juicy sweetness cutting through heat. A cheeseburger with pepper jack finds balance against the citrus bitterness. The standard format is a 12-pack of 12 oz cans, which is the most widely available configuration. Is Barbarian Haze worth the price? Barbarian Haze positions as a mid-tier craft IPA — above macro hazy offerings but accessible within the broader craft 12-pack market. The double dry-hopping process and premium three-hop bill justify its place in that range, particularly for drinkers who value hop intensity and aroma complexity. Why Barbarian Haze? The double dry-hopping process via Three Floyds' Hop Gun Pro system is the defining production detail here — it extracts maximum aromatic oil from Simcoe, Citra, and Mosaic hops while avoiding the grassy, harsh bitterness that can plague lesser hazy IPAs. That technique, combined with Three Floyds' two-decade reputation for uncompromising hop-forward brewing, gives Barbarian Haze a density of tropical aroma and a resinous depth that separates it from more generic entries in the hazy IPA category. An 88 on BeerAdvocate and nearly 56,000 Untappd ratings confirm it resonates well beyond regional loyalty. For drinkers who want a 12-pack hazy IPA with genuine craft pedigree and serious hop character, this is one of the stronger options coming out of the Midwest.
