Mended and well preserved, there is a surprising vibrancy in this 18th century paneled wool coverlet. It was most likely homespun with a hand spindle, showcasing many months of ard uous handwork. Woven on a narrow loom, the three panels are hand sewn together with charming inconsistencies that demonstrate a primitive ingenuity. The classic windowpane plaid is chestnut colored over a muted chartreuse, painstakingly measured for a consistent pattern. Remnants of a magenta hued silk border still frame the piece, though perhaps it had once been a strikingly deep English violet. Its current spritely color brings a contemporary and playful spirit to the piece, illuminating the transformative properties of well-made textiles.
