The twelve ambitions of the Buddha of Medicine are outlined in one sutra, the aspirations of the seven other medicine buddhas are outlined in another, and the dharanis or mantras of the countless Buddhas of treatment are outlined in the third sutra. He is also a prominent figure in the Four Medical Tantras, which form the basis of Tibetan medicine and numerous therapeutic sadhanas. Siddhartha Gautama was born as the crown prince of the mighty Shakya Kingdom and nurtured to be a king in line with his royal father's aspirations. However, when he was around 29 years old, he learned about people's tremendous pain in life. He abandoned his palace life and gave up his magnificent robes and gold to uncover the reasons for this anguish and the methods to alleviate it. After nearly six years of study, self-deprivation, and severe concentration, he achieved his aim. He had attained enlightenment (a Buddha). He renounced his throne to become a Dharmakara Bodhisattva monk. He worked for five eons before attaining enlightenment and becoming a Buddha. Amitabha is a Buddhist deity who represents compassion and wisdom.
