In 1942, the Flying Tigers, also known as the AVG, disbanded and some pilots returned to their branches. Others formed the 23rd Fighter Group, which joined the 14th Air Force and i ts insignia represents its heritage. Tiger Squadron Commander Gregory Boyington, who shot down six Japanese planes, later received a Medal of Honor and became a Marine Corps ace. The Flying Tiger design is a homage to this era.
