Biography Akke Hugh Malmeström (1894 - 1968) was a Swedish painter associated with 20th-century Scandinavian painterly expression. Malmeström studied both in Sweden alongside Rome, Munich, and Paris, where, between 1922 and 1924 he studied at the Academie Colarossi, the same school that had drawn Rodin and Modigliani before him. He then spent six years working in Hamburg, giving his career a deliberately pan-European formation that few Swedish painters of his generation could emulate. He became particularly known for his depictions of rural life, landscapes, and folkloric scenes inspired by Dalarna, including midsummer celebrations, village festivities, and pastoral harvest motifs. Alongside his easel paintings, Malmeström also worked in printmaking and monumental decorative arts, producing woodcuts and religious glass mosaics for churches in Sweden and abroad, including commissions connected to the Vatican in Rome. Malmeström’s paintings are distinguished by their luminous colour harmonies, broad atmospheric brushwork, and poetic interpretation of the Scandinavian landscape. His work is represented in private collections alongside the museums of Örebro and Leksand.
