Timemore Black Mirror Basic 3.0 Coffee Scales The Timemore Black Mirror Basic 3.0 is the latest generation of the Black Mirror series, and it's a proper step up from its predecessor. Developed in collaboration with 2022 World Barista Champion Anthony Douglas, the Basic 3.0 has been redesigned from the ground up: 25% lighter, 35% slimmer, and noticeably more accurate at the low end of the weight range. For pour over and filter brewers, that improved sensitivity (accurate from just 0.2g, compared to 0.5g on the Basic 2) means more confident dosing whether you're weighing out 12g for an AeroPress or 60g for a batch brew on the Chemex. What really sets the Basic 3.0 apart is the new three-mode system, accessed via a tactile multifunction slider on the side. Pour-Over Mode auto-tares when you place your server on the scale, auto-starts the timer with your first pour, and gives you a live coffee-to-water ratio readout as you brew, so you can dial in a 1:16 V60 or a 1:17 Kalita without doing the maths mid-pour. Espresso Mode handles the same automation for shot pulling: place your cup on the drip tray, the scale tares, the timer starts the moment espresso hits the cup, and locks your final yield and shot time when you lift the cup away. Regular Mode is there for everything else, from weighing beans to portioning out cold brew concentrate. A custom load cell delivers fast, stable readings, while electromagnetic shielding blocks interference from nearby grinders, espresso machines, and magnetic distribution tools (a genuine headache on some of the earlier Black Mirror models). IPX3 splash resistance means you can brew with confidence, and the new wrap-around silicone mat hugs the chassis edge to edge, with a flip-side portafilter rest and channels that guide spills away from the electronics. Add in 24 hours of screen-on time from the 1600mAh battery, USB-C charging, and a footprint slim enough to slip into a brew kit bag. It works just as well at home, behind the cafe bar, or on the road. Pour-Over Mode gives you a live brew ratio readout and auto-starts your timer as soon as you begin pouring, which is ideal for V60, Chemex, Kalita, and other manual filter methods. Espresso Mode handles auto-tare, auto-start, and shot timing on the drip tray, so you can pull and weigh shots hands-free. The 20mm slim chassis also means it fits under most domestic and prosumer espresso machines. How accurate is the Basic 3.0 compared to the Basic 2?The Basic 3.0 reads accurately from 0.2g, whereas the Basic 2 was only reliable above 0.5g. Both scales offer 0.1g resolution, but the lower threshold on the Basic 3.0 makes a real difference when weighing small espresso doses or measuring out lighter additions like salt for cold brew. Will it fit on my espresso machine drip tray?At 140 × 120 × 20mm, the Basic 3.0 has a roughly 10% smaller footprint than the Basic 2 and is 35% shorter in height. It fits comfortably on the drip trays of most home espresso machines, including the Breville/Sage Bambino, Barista Express, Lelit Anna, Rancilio Silvia, and Gaggia Classic. We'd always recommend checking your machine's drip tray dimensions before purchasing. How long does the battery last and how is it charged? The 1600mAh battery delivers up to 24 hours of continuous screen-on use (Timemore estimates this at around 280 five-minute pour overs). It charges fully in 3.5 hours via the included USB-C cable. Is it waterproof? The Basic 3.0 is IPX3-rated, meaning it's resistant to splashes and light spills from any angle up to 60 degrees from vertical. It's not designed to be fully submerged or rinsed under a running tap, but it'll happily handle the occasional drip or splash during brewing. What's the difference between the Basic 3.0 and the Basic 2?The Basic 3.0 is lighter (300g vs 400g+), slimmer (20mm vs 30mm+), more accurate at low weights (0.2g vs 0.5g minimum), and adds a multifunction slider, three dedicated timer modes, a live ratio readout, and improved EMI shielding. The wrap-around silicone mat and IPX3 splash rating are also new. Does the auto-flow detection work reliably?Yes, the Basic 3.0 uses an updated load cell and improved EMI shielding to deliver more stable readings, which directly helps the auto-start function. The timer triggers on the first drip or pour and pauses cleanly once flow stops, with a 3-second lead-in option for pour over so the timer starts exactly when you do. Can I see the coffee-to-water ratio while I'm brewing?Yes. Once you've dosed your coffee and tapped the Ratio button, the Basic 3.0 displays your live ratio as you pour, updating in real time. No more pausing mid-brew to do the maths. Is there a warranty?Timemore offers a 12-month manufacturer warranty on the Basic 3.0. If you have any issues, get in touch with us and we'll help you sort it. How does it compare to other scales like the Acaia Pearl or Felicita Arc?The Basic 3.0 sits between budget timer scales and higher-end options like the Acaia Pearl or Felicita Arc. You get many of the same features (auto-tare, auto-start, flow rate, ratio readout) at a fraction of the price, without the Bluetooth app integration some brewers want and others don't need.
