Rheum x hybridum 'Timperley Early' is the earliest rhubarb in general cultivation, ideal for forcing and capable of cropping from February under a forcer. Left unforced it yields f rom March right through to October. The succulent stems are red at the base, shading to light green with red freckling, and have a very good sweet flavour. Rhubarb grows best in full sun to partial shade on fertile, moist but well-drained soil, with a generous mulch of organic matter each spring. Let young crowns establish for a season before harvesting heavily. Pull stems rather than cutting, leaving several in place, and remove flower spikes as they appear. Show more
