They can encourage a calmer chewing action and improve overall bit acceptance. The McHardy is a tongue relief mouthpiece, and it has a medium port creating space for the tongue, relieving pressure. The Buster Roller in the middle increases bar pressure and as a result extends the head and brings the nose in giving more control. This mouthpiece is a good option where the horse appreciates tongue relief, but a happy tongue or ported lack a little control, for example a horse that rides quietly in general but can snatch a little in the strides before a fence.
