Quick, Simple Free SO2 Testing for Home and Small-Scale Winemakers Monitor sulfite levels in your wines with confidence using the Titrets Free SO2 Tester. This convenient, single-use test kit uses the industry-standard “Ripper” chemistry to give you fast, easy-to-read results in ppm free SO2, helping you protect your wine from oxidation and microbial spoilage. What This Kit Does Measures free SO2: Designed specifically to measure free sulfur dioxide levels in wine, reported directly in ppm (mg/L). Ripper chemistry: Uses an iodide-iodate titrant in acid solution with a starch indicator, the same screening method widely used in wineries. Dry white wine friendly: Provides acceptable accuracy for dry white wines, with typical error up to about 10 ppm. Best Uses & Important Limitations Recommended for: Dry white wines where you need a quick screening test to verify your target free SO2 level. Not recommended for: Red wines or white wines containing significant ascorbic acid or tannin, as these can cause falsely high readings. Use caution above 40 ppm: Any reading greater than about 40 ppm free SO2 should be considered suspect; confirm with an alternative sulfite test method if possible. What’s Included Test vials: Box of 10 Titrets ampoules pre-dosed for free SO2 testing. Plastic tubes & accessories: Includes the plastic tubes/valve assemblies needed to perform each test. Compact packaging: Easy to store in your winery, cellar, or home winemaking space. How the Titrets Free SO2 Tester Works Color-change endpoint: As you add small amounts of your wine sample into the ampoule, the solution shifts from deep blue to colorless (or the color of your sample) at the endpoint. Direct ppm reading: Once the color change occurs, hold the ampoule tip-up and read the printed scale at the liquid level to obtain free SO2 in ppm. Screening tool: Ideal for routine checks to ensure your sulfite additions are in the right range for wine stability. Basic Testing Instructions (Summary) Step 1: Collect your wine sample in a clean container. Step 2: Push the valve assembly onto the Titret ampoule tip until it reaches the reference line. Step 3: Gently snap the ampoule tip at the score mark. Step 4: With the valve tip immersed in the sample, briefly squeeze the bead valve to draw a small amount of wine. The contents turn a deep blue. Wait 30 seconds and rock to mix. Step 5: Continue adding small amounts of sample, rocking to mix after each addition, until the blue color disappears and the liquid becomes colorless (or matches the wine’s color). Step 6: Stop the test and read the scale opposite the liquid level to determine free SO2 in ppm (mg/L). Why Monitor Free SO2? Oxidation control: Proper free SO2 levels help guard against browning, loss of aroma, and stale flavors. Microbial stability: Keeping sulfite in the right range helps protect wine from unwanted yeast and bacteria. Better cellaring decisions: Regular testing lets you adjust sulfite additions accurately for bottling and long-term storage. Who This Kit Is For Home winemakers: An easy, low-equipment way to start testing and dialing in your sulfite management. Small wineries & garages: A convenient backup or screening tool alongside more advanced lab testing. Wine educators & clubs: Great for teaching the basics of sulfite management and free SO2 testing in hands-on settings.
