Tomato 'Black Opal' is a unique and productive cherry tomato, prized for its unusual dark colouring and exceptionally rich, sweet flavour. This cordon variety grows as a tall vine, yielding prolific trusses of small, round, deep mahogany-red fruits with a complex, delicious taste. It is an excellent choice for growing in a greenhouse or a warm, sheltered spot, promising a visually striking and flavourful harvest for any vegetable grower. Sow 'Black Opal' seeds in pots or trays of compost under cover, keeping them in a warm place at around 20-22C for reliable germination. When the seedlings have developed their first true leaves, carefully prick them out into individual pots and grow them on in bright, frost-free conditions. Gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions before moving them to their final growing position after all risk of hard frost has passed. Choose a spot in full sun with rich, fertile, and well-draining soil. As a cordon type, it is essential to provide a sturdy support, such as a tall cane or stake, for the vine to be tied to as it grows. Space plants about 45-60cm apart. Water consistently and feed regularly with a high-potash fertiliser once the first fruits begin to form.
