Modern facsimile of a chromolithograph published by G.W. Bacon & Co, circa 1900. Image size: 902mm x 210mm plus borders Excellent condition throughout. Printed to 300gsm archival P hoto Rag media using lightfast pigmented inks. The map itself derives from an original published by William Tombleson in 1834. Subsequent editions appeared throughout the nineteenth century. This one is based on one that was published by George Washington Bacon around 1900 – i.e., according to the evidence that Tower Bridge (opened 1894) is shown, but a ferry is still seen to be operating at Greenwich; the foot tunnel that opened in 1902 is not shown. The Illustrated London News of 1845 sang the praise of the Thames thus: 'The fatal Niger, the mighty Amerzon (sic), the turpid Mississippi, the picturesque and historic Rhine, the rushing Danube, and the classic Tiber, have each their scenes, their stories, and associations; but commend us the river, whose bosom bears the ships of all nations, freighted with richest and rarest products of the earth - whose warehouses hold in plenteous abundance the harvest of all climes, and whose commerce is told in every language man can speak.'
