In this case, the first color, red was printed by hand with a spoon and the second color, black, printed over the red. The print is made on an 8 x 8.5 inch hand torn, deckled edge paper. Traditionally, the Tomte are hardworking folk that watch over the barn animals through the year, especially the pigs. On Christmas they hope to get only one item as a thanks - a bowl of porridge with a heaping pile of butter. If they don't they are said to get angry, playing mischievous tricks on the owners and their livestock!
