It’s finally here… I’ve been talking about this one for a while! We’re circling back to tonal values and taking a proper deep dive into what they are, why they matter, and how to actually use them in your painting. We do go a bit deeper here, but only to pull out what’s genuinely useful for us as watercolourists, whatever your level. I’ll walk you through a wonderfully simple way to understand tone, distilling it down from more academic approaches into something practical, clear, and easy to apply. Along the way, we’ll explore a couple of different ways to look at light, shadow, and tone, using small tonal studies to really get to grips with it, followed by a full tonal painting. The real joy of this tutorial is that, for a moment, we can forget about colour completely and focus purely on tonal values and paint consistency - two of the absolute keys to feeling more confident and comfortable with watercolour. A really useful tutorial in its own right, with a fun end result… but also the perfect setup for moving into colour in the next lesson.
