Tonalide is a classic polycyclic musk (like Galaxolide) which was discovered in 1954. It is very popular in functional fragrances (such as soaps, shampoos, and laundry detergents) as it is non-water soluble so it remains after rinsing. Tonalide is sweet, musky and slightly fruity. In fine fragrance it has a long history of use in men's perfumes, having a somewhat synergistic effect on coumarin, but it also features in feminine perfumes such as Paris (1983) from YSL. It is also found in Apple Brandy by Kilian at 5.5%, in DKNY Be 100% Delicious at 3% and a huge 8% in Fleur de Male by Jean Paul Gaultier. A more restrained 2% decorates both Lipstick Rose and The Night by Frederic Malle, Silver Mountain Water by Creed, and Fantomas by Nasomatto. Show more
