A handwoven Tonga winnowing basket from ZimbabweThese solid-edged baskets are the pinnacle of the basket-maker’s art in Zimbabwe. Each begins as a woven square and is worked into a n almost perfect circle — a form still used to winnow grain today. They’re affectionately known as “grandmother baskets”, as fewer younger weavers are learning the craft.This colourful range carries a lovely sustainability story too: the weavers work strands of discarded plastic into the weave, giving each basket its vivid colour while keeping waste out of landfill.Handmade, so each varies by a centimetre or two — part of its charm.
