Fiber glass reinforced (FGR) thermoset polyester plastics are characterized by very high strength to weight ratios, high heat distortion temperature and dimensional stability, very low· water absorption, and immunity to rot and decay. These prop­erties and a record of many years of satisfactory service in applications such as boat hulls and architectural panels, suggest consideration of this construction material, particularly the fire-retardant grades, for use as fill and cladding in cooling towers.
