Recent EPA rulings favor the increased use of alkaline cooling water treatments in recirculating systems. However, there is no test of scale inhibitor effectiveness available today that adequately defines performance. For example, scale inhibition is related crucially to characteristics of water flow, presence of heat exchange surfaces, and detailed water chemistry. The newly developed dynamic scale test apparatus quantitatively relates degree of scale inhibition to these factors.
