The problem of "white rust" of galvanized steel cooling towers is defined. The available published literature is reviewed briefly. Laboratory work designed to determine the impact of several chemical and physical parameters are described. The nature of the protective layer which forms on galvanized steel surfaces in contact with different chemical environments is described.
