Tradescantia ‘Nanouk’ is a colourful, fast-growing houseplant prized for its chunky striped leaves in shades of green, cream, pink and purple. Supplied in a 12cm diameter nursery pot at approximately 15cm tall, ‘Nanouk’ starts relatively compact but grows quickly, producing fleshy stems that gradually spread and trail. It was specially bred for its compact growth, strong foliage and distinctive colouring. Light & Position Tradescantia ‘Nanouk’ grows best in bright, filtered light. Plenty of light helps maintain its strongest pink and purple colouring and encourages compact, healthy growth. It will tolerate a slightly shadier position, although the variegation may become less pronounced and growth can become more stretched. Avoid prolonged strong midday sunshine through glass, which can scorch the leaves. Watering Water when the upper few centimetres of compost have started to dry, then water thoroughly and allow any excess to drain away. ‘Nanouk’ prefers not to remain constantly wet, so avoid leaving the nursery pot sitting in water. Water more regularly during spring and summer while the plant is actively growing, then reduce watering during autumn and winter. Feeding Feed approximately once a month during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser while the plant is actively growing. Reduce or stop feeding during autumn and winter when growth naturally slows. Growth & Care ‘Nanouk’ is a quick-growing, spreading and trailing plant. Its stems can be allowed to cascade naturally from a shelf or hanging planter, or pinched back regularly to maintain a fuller, bushier shape. If stems become long or sparse, simply trim them back. New growth will usually develop from lower down the stem, and the cut pieces can be used to propagate new plants. Tradescantias are particularly easy to propagate. Take a healthy stem cutting just below a node and root it in water or directly into lightly moist compost. Can Tradescantia ‘Nanouk’ Grow Outdoors in the UK? Yes, during the warmer months. ‘Nanouk’ can be moved outdoors once temperatures are reliably mild, where it works well in containers and sheltered summer displays. Choose a bright but protected position and introduce it gradually to stronger outdoor light. It is not frost hardy, so bring it back indoors well before temperatures become cold in autumn.
