Tradition was a typical reggae combo. Formed in the 1970s by the drummer Tony Matthews and keyboardist Paul “Echo Thompson” this band also included rotating cast of various instrumentalists on bass, guitar and vocals. They had a bit of a double-life, recording audience-friendly lovers rock for major RCA, while cutting experimental dub on Venture Records. This retitled debut, which originally came out as “Tradition In Dub” (1977, BPI), is in the latter category. Considerably less outré than trippy and synth-heavy “Captain Ganja”, “High Risk Dub” instead showcases Tradition’s impeccable command of the so-called drum and bass sound. Spare and spacious it is quite characteristic of the late-1970s dub produced in the UK.-- snowsovgethen.com
