Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890) Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh is one of the most expensive and influential figures in the history of art. Nevertheless, he had an absolutely tragic life. He didn’t become a priest like he wanted, he was poor and officially mad – van Gogh spent time in psychiatric hospitals, cut his left ear after a confrontation with his friend Paul Gaugin, and committed suicide at 37 years. But all the way long he was an undeniable genius. He created about 2000 artworks – landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits with his signature bold colors and impulsive brushwork. Irises Saint-Rémy, 1890 Before his departure from the asylum at Saint-Rémy, van Gogh painted four exuberant bouquets of spring flowers: two of irises, two of roses. In the letter to his sister Willemien he wrote “in the last few days at St-Rémy I worked like a man in a frenzy, especially on bouquets of flowers.
