Preparation was the only thing that helped to calm the nervousness before the hólmgang. The regulated duel of honor between two warriors which more and more replaced the one-wic - the fight to the death without rules. Usually only fought until the first blood or the opponent's downfall, served as a means of settling disputes in the early medieval Germanic and Nordic society. Ideally suited for such a fight on foot was clothing that allowed the best possible freedom of leg movement.
