Turning Tide is the central image in my three-piece Between Tides series, and for me it is the image that really anchors the group. The first thing that grabbed me was the gold. It spreads across so much of the frame, but then this beautiful curved channel sweeps through it, edged with pale blue, silver and just a touch of green. I love that curve. It completely changes the image. Your eye follows it around the frame and suddenly you start noticing all the smaller things—the ripples in the sand, the little pools, the changes in colour and the marks left behind by the water. From directly above, something as familiar as a tidal landscape becomes almost completely abstract. There is no horizon and very little sense of scale. I'm simply looking at colour, shape and the patterns created as the tide moves across the landscape. Turning Tide sits at the centre of Between Tides, a series exploring the constantly changing colours and patterns revealed where shallow water and land meet. Interior Design Suggestions Turning Tide is the warmest of the three works in Between Tides, with the gold and sandy tones dominating the image. The pale blue, silver and touches of green running through the channel keep it fresh, making it particularly easy to use in an interior. It would work beautifully with warm whites, natural timber, limestone, travertine, linen and soft neutral furnishings. I think this image would be especially strong printed large. From across the room, that sweeping curve becomes the dominant element. As you move closer, the smaller ripples and textures start to emerge. It also works particularly well as the central piece in a three-artwork grouping from the Between Tides series, where its warmer palette provides a natural bridge between the other works.
