Quick Facts: ABV: 11.5% | Origin: Penedès, Catalonia, Spain | Brut Reserva (minimum 15 months on lees) | Producer: Tussock Jumper Production & Heritage Tussock Jumper sources wines from established growing regions worldwide, with each bottling produced and bottled at source — meaning the grapes are grown, vinified, and packaged in the same place. This Cava is produced using the método tradicional, the same secondary-in-bottle fermentation used in Champagne, in the Penedès region of Catalonia — Spain's historic epicenter for Cava production. The blend of Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada represents the classic Cava trinity: Macabeo contributes floral aromatics, Xarel-lo adds body and structure, and Parellada brings acidity and finesse. The Reserva classification requires a minimum of 15 months of lees aging, which develops the toasty, brioche-like complexity that distinguishes this bottling from entry-level Cava. Tasting Notes Aroma: Spiced pear and baked apple arrive first, followed by subtle brioche-yeast notes and a whisper of almond cream. There is a delicate undercurrent of lemon zest that keeps things lively and fresh. Taste: The entry is crisp with green apple and pear skin, transitioning quickly into a surprisingly full and fleshy mid-palate. Rich baked apple tart flavors develop alongside spicy nutmeg and almond pastry, carried by fine, persistent bubbles. White peach and orchard fruit round out the peak, balanced by clean acidity. Finish: Medium in length with a clean, dry mineral edge and lingering citrus peel. A light green-almond note persists, and the mousse dissipates with an elegant, refreshing prickle. How to Drink Tussock Jumper Cava Serve well chilled between 6–8°C (43–46°F) in a tulip-shaped glass to preserve the mousse and concentrate the aromatics. This Cava drinks beautifully on its own as an aperitif. For cocktails, try it in a French 75, where the baked apple and almond notes play well against gin and lemon; a Cava Sangria, pairing the orchard fruit profile with sliced peaches and a splash of brandy; or a Bellini, where white peach purée echoes the wine's inherent stone fruit character. It leads with crisp green apple and spiced pear, developing into richer baked apple tart and almond pastry flavors with a clean, dry mineral finish. The extended lees aging adds a subtle brioche complexity that sets it apart from younger, simpler sparkling wines. How does Tussock Jumper Cava compare to Segura Viudas Brut Reserva? Both are Brut Reserva Cavas from Penedès using the traditional Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada blend with método tradicional production. Tussock Jumper leans toward richer baked fruit and almond pastry notes, while Segura Viudas tends to emphasize citrus and floral aromatics with a slightly leaner profile. Is Tussock Jumper Cava good for sipping on its own? Absolutely — the Reserva-level lees aging gives it enough complexity and textural weight to hold attention as a standalone aperitif, while the brut dosage keeps the finish dry and refreshing. Where is Tussock Jumper Cava made? It is produced in the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain, the denomination of origin responsible for the vast majority of Cava production. The wine is bottled at source in the same area where the grapes are grown. What foods pair well with Tussock Jumper Cava? Marcona almonds complement the wine's almond pastry notes; jamón ibérico echoes the nutty, savory undercurrents; grilled prawns with lemon match the citrus acidity; aged Manchego plays against the brioche richness; and light fruit tarts mirror the baked apple character without overwhelming the palate. What sizes does Tussock Jumper Cava come in? The standard offering is a 750ml bottle, which is the widely available format for this Reserva expression. Is Tussock Jumper Cava worth the price? It positions as a value-driven Reserva Cava, delivering traditional method complexity — including extended lees aging and classic Penedès varietal character — at a price tier well below most Champagnes and many premium Cavas, making it strong competition in the quality sparkling wine category. Why Tussock Jumper Cava? The 88-point Decanter score validates what the glass confirms: this is a Reserva Cava punching above its weight class. The traditional Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Parellada blend aged a minimum of 15 months on lees produces genuine autolytic complexity — baked apple, almond cream, brioche — that you typically associate with pricier bottles. The commitment to bottling at source ensures provenance and freshness, a detail that matters in sparkling wine where dissolved CO₂ quality degrades with poor handling. For anyone exploring Cava beyond supermarket-shelf basics, this Reserva represents a credible step up without a corresponding leap in price.
