To prevent these peaks from damaging connected component s, capacitors are typically used, which is an effective method. Capacitors help smooth out voltage fluctuations by storing energy when the voltage rises and releasing it when the voltage drops. However, capacitors may be too slow to handle very short but intense voltage spikes, which can occur in the range of nanoseconds to microseconds and can exceed the normal battery voltage by two to three times. While most components can withstand multiple such spikes even if they exceed their rated voltage, excessively strong or prolonged spikes can damage voltage regulators, capacitors, and FETs.
