Faithful to an original Zsolnay form from 1898, the Ribbon Vase is Hungarian Art Nouveau in its purest expression. A rounded, gently ribbed body rises on a flared foot to a fluted, ruffled mouth, while two long ribbon-like handles sweep outward and curl down the sides. It is the flowing, fabric-in-motion gesture that gives the vase its name. The finish is where Zsolnay's mastery shows. A deep iridescent Eosin glaze runs a lustrous green across the body, catching warm gold and amber along every ridge and rim so the surface glows and shifts as the light moves around it. Introduced by Vilmos Zsolnay in 1893, this lustre technique remains a closely guarded secret of the manufactory in Pécs. At 24cm tall, the Ribbon Vase makes a graceful statement on a sideboard, console, or as a sculptural centrepiece that needs no flowers to hold attention.
