Karl Hyde and Rick Smith had already been working together for over a decade — art college in Cardiff, then the synth-pop group Freur, then a first, rock-shaped version of Underworld — when a teenage DJ from Romford named Darren Emerson joined them in 1991 and changed what the band was for. dubnobasswithmyheadman arrived in 1994 and is still regularly named among the best electronic albums ever made. Second Toughest in the Infants followed in 1996. What set them apart was the humanity inside the machine music: Hyde's fractured, overheard, half-sung lyrics riding on Smith's long, patient builds, and an on-stage refusal to play anything the same way twice. "Born Slippy .NUXX" was a B-side. Danny Boyle put it at the end of Trainspotting in 1996 and it stopped belonging to the band entirely — it has been a fixture of British nights out ever since. Beaucoup Fish came in 1999, and Emerson left the following year, closing the chapter with the live album Everything, Everything. The sets collected here are from the middle of that run: the 1996 Essential Mix, Barrowlands, Roskilde, Rock Werchter, Eurockéennes, the Ally Pally New Year's Eve, Pinkpop and the Japanese and Australian shows of 1999. The years from 2000 onward are in the separate modern Underworld package.
