In fact, Alex still receives mentorship from one of the legends of this era; but his work goes further in its thematic exploration and is appropriately suited for modern tastes. 60% of proceeds go directly to the artist. From the artist: The title of the painting, "Scramble for metals in Zambia," (oil on canvas, 80cm x 60cm) might allude to the wider neo-colonial exploits of the nation's mineral resources which conveniently ignore the plight of the locals. However, the main focus of this painting is a bustling village scene with men engulfing a scrap metal dealership. Nowadays, scrap metal, ranging from old geysers and blunt hoes can be seen being pushed around neighbourhoods in wheelbarrows, although the industry is regulated by the Scrap Metal Dealers Act of 1960 which places restrictions on certain scrap, there does seem to be loopholes. This painting might therefore be read as a critique of the trade, implying also that it is not restricted to the cities. Show more
