A successful and affluent captain in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Captain William Alfred Matthews commanded the merchant ship the Lancashire Witch. With his strong incom e, he built himself an impressive property on Mill Hill Road in Cowes, where he lived until his death in the 1920s. Although long since dead, it seems however that something of the Captain may still remain, as early one morning in 1994 the owner of the property encountered the partial visage of a man with a beard and moustache dressed in dark clothing at the top of the stairs, seemingly disturbed by renovations to his former home.
