The Gardai, the Irish police, seized comics under warrant, investigated them and even borrowed comics to see what was available. There was a litany of complaint, objection and outrage about comics in the 1950s. Comics historian and fan James Bacon shares his research into the unique and singular Irish experience during the moral panic about comics during the 1950s in Ireland. Comics initially were just regarded by some as more of the British demoralizing influence during the time of the Committee on Evil Literature. Ireland had a functioning censorship system from 1929 that was adept at banning thousands of publications, yet less than twenty comics were banned in Ireland. The Catholic Church, local politicians, and teachers in the shape of the Irish National Teachers Organisation all spoke strongly against comics. There was a dynamic approach to the attacks on comics, portrayed as propaganda, as an impediment to education, or as an “evil” influence, including the allegation that “crime” and “horror” comics created an increase in juvenile crime. With a “Crusader Against Comics”, a Galway student touring Ireland investigating the “crime comic menace”, the “Anti-Crime Comic League” from the Sisters of Mercy at Rosslare as well as organisations like the League of Decency, and Catholic Young Men’s Society, there was no shortage of people agitating against comics. Politicians were happy to speak against comics with self-righteous outrage, blaming the government and sending their resolutions to high office and other organisations, but they seemed to fail to send the actual comics in for prohibition, even when told the process by the Censorship Board. James Bacon was astonished to find actual physical comics in the National Archive of Ireland, one of which, Spellbound, caused quite the stir in November 1954 as a “horror” comic that was printed in Ireland. Follow the trail of government documents and press coverage as the relevant comics are considered, looking at what the issue or non-issue was and questioning why they were banned. What were they doing wrong? From Eagle to Superman and Crime SuspenStories to Detective Comics, all have a part to play in this incredible history, their part discussed in detail. The true motivations for why people in Ireland spoke about a desire to stop children reading comics, ban comics altogether or have the government take action are very unclear. Did they seriously think they did harm? Juvenile crime was of course a clarion call, but did any of those attributing blame to comics ever consider the actual crime figures? It is unlikely, as it seems they were falling and not keeping pace with adult crime. Bacon does draw in Irish historical aspects beyond comics, providing the Irish context that may help readers in understanding as the threads of the main subject, comics and censorship, are woven through with Ireland’s broader history. Presenting considerable amounts of research from the National Archives of Ireland, the Dublin Diocese Archives, newspaper archives, and the National Library of Ireland, join Bacon on this rediscovery of comics and exploration of a hidden history that these comics, which caused so many issues, knit together.
