Prior to the 1992 release of the movie “A River Runs Through It,” the Blackfoot River wasn’t well known by out-of-state anglers. Today, it’s one of Montana’s more popular rivers, attracting visitors and locals alike. This self-guided tour focuses on the Upper Blackfoot, and is perfect walk and wade water for hot summer days -- especially when most of the Blackfoot is subject to “Hoot Owl” closures and restrictions. The upper river stays colder, it's smaller and the fly fishing pressure isn’t as intense. Unlike many rivers, you don’t have a lot of fishing access from the road due to private property, and much of this upper section fishes poorly.
