The educational methodologies designed into the program teach pattern recognition through immediate, direct comparisons of pathologies; promote remembering of unfamiliar pathologies through instantaneous, learner-controlled, and repetitive (if selected) viewing of the pathologies; and enhance clinical knowledge and performance through learner-initiated viewing of the educational text sequences and individualized multiple-choice exams for each video clip. The Upper GI Endoscopy (UGIE) program is a visual database of common pathologies of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The program contains 83 full-motion, color video clips with educa-tional information for each. The program has two modes: one to study the endoscopic video clips and educational information, the other to test your ability to identify pathologies and assess your knowledge about them. You can move back and forth between these two modes with the click of the mouse button. The educational methodologies and computer program were designed and developed by Interactive Drama Inc. ODD of Bethesda, Maryland. The endoscopic video segments of upper GI tract pathologies and educational text were provided by the gastroenterologists of Capital Education Corporation (CEC), Washington, D.C. The program was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Astra Merck, Inc. The educational effectiveness of the program was demonstrated in a 1995 field test conducted at four GI teaching institutions, one managed care organization, and three groups of gastroenterologists. During these tests, 89Ͽf the 66 attending physicians and fellows reviewing an earlier version of the UGIE program rated it "Extremely Effective," "Very Effective," or "Effective" compared to other methods of learning about upper GI pathologies (e.g., slides, videotapes, photographs, etc.).
