In Uruguay, where I am originally from, the most important artist J.Torres Garcia, in 1935, inverted the Latin American map and made a statement: “Our North is the South”. By doing so he was resisting the dominant culture from the north (Europe) and promoting a new cultural order with a predominance from the south. Because Australia is known as Downunder, inspired by Torres’ concept and did the same with the Aussie map naming it “Upside-down(under)” to honour my adopted home, and celebrate our unique culture.
