Dyers love urea for its moisture-retaining properties and its ability to help dissolve hard-to-mix dyes. It’s a must-have for tie-dye, direct application, and silk painting. A little goes a long way, each pound yields about 2.5 cups. How to Mix For tie-dye, use ¼ cup per quart of dye solution. For direct application, use ¾ cup per quart of chemical water. Mixing a large batch? Dissolve 1 cup of urea in 1 gallon of hot water, let it cool, and store in a cool place. If it smells like ammonia, it’s time to toss it.
