Vardy was sold for $25 USD so his dad could buy narcotics. Vardy tried to run away from the trafficker, but he was caught, beaten him with a cane and tied hand and foot. Vardy was then sold to a the owner of a rock quarry. In the quarry, people were reduced to living like animals, fighting over food and abusing each other in every possible way. The burning sun and bare rock made working in the quarry blur into endless days of beatings and starvation rations. Vardy regularly saw workers die from accidents, and the ambivalent managers didn't provide any care to dying workers. One night, one of our field teams snuck into the place where the workers slept and rescued a dozen children. Vardy came to live at The Sylom Children's Home where he slowly began to recover from the physical hardship of the quarry.
