This photograph depicts a very dramatic and drawn out scene. To best help describe this it, I am going to start at its bottom, its beginning. The bottom 5th of the photo is filled by the ruins of a past barrier that served as a house wall to a family. Its shadows and highlights help transition the eye from something close and old to something that may be slightly newer, the village. The boundaries of each house are the color of the wall that makes up the first portion of the photo. They are scattered throughout the scene, but they add an intense amount of curiosity to the scene. The light blue roofs that protect each home, instead of transitioning from light to dark, old to new, are transitioning to something eternally new: the sky. The sky sits on top of the old and new, and it will never look the same, each cloud varying from the last. The color of the sky starts to shift in saturation as it reaches the edge of the frame. In between the village and the village, at the guidance of the ridges behind the homes, sits a +14,500 mountain, somehow hiding from our view, but still adding to the scene. Each of these elements comes together to form one of my most interesting images. This is VARIANCE. STORY This photograph has an insane amount of hidden detail. However, it truly is a photograph that captures who I am. From the +14,500-foot mountain, to the valley leading to a hidden city of 180,000, to the weathered village, and to the ruins of something old, this is VARIANCE. This photograph is more of a memory than a story for me. While there certainly are tales that pop into my mind as I observe the events within, it holds more emotion than anything else. The old, beaten-down structures and the zing of the smell that I know for certain flows out of those houses. The immovable masses hovering over my old city and the ever-changing skies. Each of these characteristics holds fast to the past of my life. The thing is, though, I believe that can truly be applied to anyone's life. Didn't we all have a home that we charged through when we were younger, represented by the walls that are no more? Don't we remember our interesting neighbors, those of whom were living different, spaced-out lives, just like these village homes? Weren't there surprising but unknown truths that were hidden by the vast ridges of our boundaries, like the hills that protect the city from view? To top it off, we all have secrets that may come across as minor and insignificant, but in reality, they are mountains on our backs, waiting to be dealt with. We can all relate to this photograph. That's the only reason why I decided to make this specific piece available to you: you can understand it.
