This error has its roots in the Armed Forces of the United States and goes way back to the 1850s when Caduceus started appearing in insignia due to misunderstandings and ignorance. Eventually, the use of the wrong symbol was formally adopted and established as the symbol of medicine in the United States. The fun part about the whole thing is that Caduceus is a symbol related to the Roman god Mercurius, who is the god of commerce, financial gain, and thievery.
