Vermillion is a warm, bright colour that draws very slightly on the orange. Its name comes directly from "vermeil" which designates a bright red. This red was commonly used in anci ent China. Originally, the pigment was derived from cinnabar – mercury sulphide – which was later abandoned because it was highly toxic.
