This block printed pillow features hand dyed cotton/linen fabric with contrast piping and a hidden zipper closure along the seam. Still considered an active volcano, Mt. Vesuvius sits watch over the city of Napoli. The Vesuvius print echos the stone, ash and eruptive potential of the historic site. The patterns in this collection blend a wide range of influences, from motifs of traditional Indian sarees, to the geometry of the Vienna Secession, to the ornamentation of Third Style Pompeii frescoes. The collection's name, Tesserae, symbolizes this idea - much like the small, intricate pieces of a mosaic, every influence from these block printed patterns and construction of each piece come together to create the whole. Studio Ford is a Los Angeles-based textile atelier that celebrates the artful practice of traditional Indian block-printing. Founded in 2017 by Josie Ford, a longtime student of art history and printmaking, the studio’s evergreen frame of reference is one of botanical and geometric observation. Their process is slow, studied, and sincere with timeless works that are heartfelt and handmade. First designed in California, textiles are then produced in close collaboration with local craftspeople in Jaipur, India.
