After moving through the F2H Banshee and F3H Demon, VF-193 was redesignated VF-142 on 15 October 1963 upon transitioning to the F-4B Phantom II. The Ghostriders made four deployments to Vietnam between 1964 and 1968 aboard USS Ranger and USS Constellation, scoring five confirmed aerial victories including MiG-17s and MiG-21s. In 1974, VF-142 transitioned to the F-14A Tomcat and moved to NAS Oceana, joining CVW-7 aboard USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. The squadron conducted the first F-14 intercept of a Soviet Tu-95 Bear bomber in April 1976.
