Townsend, best known as a writer-director-comedian (Hollywood Shuffle, The Five Heartbeats), stepped into a dramatic action role. The film was part of the early-2000s wave of independent action thrillers that found their primary audience through home video and cable television. Robert Townsend is an important figure in Black cinema. His self-funded Hollywood Shuffle (1987) was a landmark of independent filmmaking, and The Five Heartbeats (1991) is one of the most beloved Black films of the '90s.
