Viburnum opulus seeds grow into the guelder rose or European cranberrybush — a large, suckering, deciduous shrub native to the temperate biome of Europe and western Asia, from Brit ain and Scandinavia south to the Mediterranean mountains and east through Turkey and the Caucasus to Central Asia and Siberia, growing in hedgerows, scrub, alder carr and moist wood margins. Described by L. (Linnaeus). The epithet opulus is an ancient name for a type of maple (from Latin) — perhaps referring to the maple-like shape of the leaves. Produces spectacular flat-topped, lace-cap flower clusters in late spring: the outer flowers are large, sterile, showy white ray flowers surrounding the smaller, fertile, central flowers — one of the most ornamentally effective native European flowering shrubs. Followed by masses of vivid, translucent, scarlet-red berries persisting into winter — an outstanding bird-food plant.
