Vietnamese Coriander is a herb plant that looks beautiful within the herb garden and tastes delicious when you harvest the foliage to use in a foodie creation within the kitchen. Native to the region of South East Asia, this beautiful herb plant will grow strongly outdoors once the risk of frost has passed. We prefer to protect this variety in our polytunnel or take cuttings to grow on next to the kitchen window. Vietnamese Coriander will grow quickly, spreading and providing you with so much delicious flavour within foliage that looks architectural and stunning. Vietnamese Coriander is much easier to grow than 'traditional coriander' and it is a perennial herb that doesn't go to seed, whereas traditional coriander is an annual that will go to seed relatively easily. When Vietnamese Coriander (Persicaria odorata) starts being once again harvested for use in our kitchen, we automatically feel the joy of knowing that lighter evenings and warmer weather are on their way. In warmer climates this plant will grow wild! It spreads impressively - customers and friends from Australia have shown us really invasive patches of Vietnamese Coriander in their home country. In the UK, it does not have the same growing habit. It is half hardy and will need some winter protection. We have actually once wintered this plant outside, but during a very mild winter and in a very sheltered spot. If in doubt, take a cutting in late summer and pop it in a pot on your kitchen windowsill as an insurance policy. It roots so easily! The most important bit - flavour! What does it taste like. Well, we tend to use this plant as a Coriander substitute. This plant does certainly have a similar taste to traditional Coriander, but also has a hint of a little spice and lemon. This just makes it even more delicious to use in the kitchen, in our opinion! We tend to chop the leaves and add it late in the cooking process as a garnish atop rice dishes. I just adore Coriander, and this plant is a variety of Coriander that is easy to grow, being perennial and not going to seed! Win win! It lends a little tropical glamour to our kitchen garden during the summer and my evening meals wouldn’t be the same without it!
